The word "Television" has two parts: "tele" and "vision." Tele is a prefix of Greek origin which means far-off. So this prefix is used in forming names of instruments for operating over long distances. Vision means the act or faculty of seeing. By television, we mean a device with a screen for receiving signals. Generally, by television, we mean the television broadcasting.

Technically speaking, the word television means transmission and reception of still or moving images by means of electrical signals, especially by means of electromagnetic radiation using the techniques of radio. Roughly speaking, television is radio and cinema combined. It has the ability to show motion pictures like cinema and at the same time it has the ability of transmission like radio.

Television is an effective medium of entertainment, information and education of the modern age. For this, we should be grateful to its inventor J.L. Baird. It is mainly used as a powerful means of entertainment. We remain seated in our room and watch entertaining plays and musical programmes.

Television is a miraculous invention of science. It is a very good pastime. It makes us fresh with its magic and we forget our worries and fatigue. Now the cable network and satellite system are far more powerful than ever. A variety is available to us and we can find a channel of our choice. Television has a great educational value. There are so many channels reserved for educational purposes. There are many companies in the world that prepare graded programmes.

These programmes are telecast and provide the facility of education to us wherever we are. Now we have the facility of video recording and we can record anything that is of our interest. Television is now an effective and essential part of a good educational institution. In Pakistan, Allama Iqbal and Virtual universities are working on these lines.

Apart from regular educational channels, there are other channels that provide entertainment as well as information. BBC, Discovery, CNN, National Geographic Channel, Geo, ARY and many others deliver a lot of information. Their news bulletins keep us in touch with the world events. in between these bulletins, we have programmes that enlighten and amuseus. As such, television is a powerful medium of Communication.

For the lovers of sports and games, television is of great help. We need not go to other places. In our rooms, we sit before our television sets and watch live matches. The facility of replay has made matches more thrilling and more entertaining, in this way, it saves time and money, Television is a source of entertainment that does not cost much But it has disadvantages as well. Like every scientific invention, television is also a double-edged weapon. if used positively, it is good. If used negatively, it is bad. Too much interest in television is the waste of time which the students cannot afford. Moreover, dish antenna and cable network are harmful for the young generation of our society. We have our social values that are under constant threat because of such television programmes.

Commercials on television lead the people astray. Companies advertise their products in quite a fascinating way. Customers feel attracted towards them. They buy them whether they need them or not. Cigarette Companies, in particular, mislead the raw youth. They are spoiling their health for material gain.

No doubt, television is a very good invention of the modern times but it must be used positively.
