Keeping in view the prevalent energy crisis, new means of power generation are being sought. increase in oil prices and decrease in the water level have adversely affected our thermal and hydro-electric power plants respectively. Under these conditions, we are left with only two options: wind energy and solar energy.

Solar energy means, using the radiation of the sun for the purpose of setting some piece of machinery to work. Solar energy is a renewable energy source as compared to the consumable energy source like furnace oil or natural gas. When a consumable energy source is used, it emits pollutants which disturb the ecosystem. Solar energy, on the other hand, is friendly to the environment as it does not give any harmful emission.

Our country is rich in this natural source, it is available free of cost. As such, it is the most suitable alternative of power generation. This system can prove very effective as it will help us in overcoming our main problem i.e. energy crisis. Sun rays are allowed to fall on specially designed plates of enormous size. Through these plates, these rays are concentrated on a pipe carrying oil.

This oil receives this energy and goes up to the temperature of about more than three hundred degrees on the Celsius scale. There are heat exchangers which transfer this heat to water. When water receives this much heat, it converts to super heated steam. This steam is used to drive the turbine that in return generates electric power.

Many countries, where the sun shines brilliantly, are adopting this technique of power generation. Our tropical areas are blessed with an extraordinary Solar resource level. A vast area of Sindh and the southern belt of Punjab are rich in this energy resource. On country on the average receives nineteen Mega Jules of solar energy per square metre. With the establishment of solar thermal power plants, we can overcome our main problem of energy shortage.

Pakistan Council for Renewable Energy Technology has launched its test programmes in Sindh. These solar celis are working quite efficiently in the remote areas of the province where there was no concept of electricity. Now the people of this far-flung area are enjoying the non-stop facility of electricity. These solar cells are the long lasting source of energy and cost very little in their maintenance and care. Their operation is fairly easy. At the same time, they are absolutely pollution free. They do not even produce any noise.

Such an effective and cheap source of energy must be put in use without any further delay. Our ministries of power generation and of science and technology should work in collaboration so that such units may be brought to use. With the passage of time, small units will also be devised to meet the power needs of shops and houses. If all the small places are powered by the solar system, our electric power can fulfil the demand of the industry.

Our government should set up a special organization like WAPDA or OGRA to regulate the production and use of such an economical way of getting power. These low-priced devices should be produced in bulk so that they may reach far and wide. In this way our rural and far-off areas will get the same facilities that are available to the residents of big cities.

If such power generation units are available at a large scale, our irrigation system will get strength. Our poor farmer cannot afford to power his tubewell with diesel. The solar energy units will run his tube-well and bring prosperity to his family. When every family enjoys the basic facilities, the whole country will prosper. We should switch over to this low cost and environment friendly technique without delay. The sooner we put it in practice, the better it will be for our suffering economy.
