Outline: A good citizen attaches equal importance to rights and duties. He is self-disciplined. He opposes the authorities when necessary. He never opposes for the sake of opposition. He is a social worker. He respects the laws of his country. A good citizen is one who knows his rights and duties as a citizen. He asserts his rights and performs his duties with equal zest. His rights in fact imply his duties. In all democracies, an individual enjoys political as well as civic rights. Political rights consist of the right to vote, right to freedom of expression and faith, right to movement, etc. Civic rights are of as vital importance as political rights. These enable an individual to live in a civilized manner. These may not be laid down strictly but they are very important. A good citizen defends his political and civic rights very: zealously. Do soldiers on the march all, hear a band together? You have noticed, perhaps, during a thunderstorm, that the clap of thunder is heard after the flash of lightning is seen. You may have noticed, too, if you have stood at some distance from a railway station as a train steams out, that the sound of the engine’s whistle reaches you some seconds after you have seen the puff of steam. The thunder-clap and the lightning flash, the whistle and the puff of steam, really take place at the same instant. How is it, then, that the one is heard after the other is seen? The explanation is simply this: that sound travels much less quickly than light, or, in other words, that the vibrations which produce the sensation of light are much more rapid than those which produce the sensation of sound. What can be nobler than molding young people into good men and women? And, rightly considered, the main function of a teacher is to do his bit in his sphere. It is very wrong of us to think that he only teaches a subject. In addition to teaching, a teacher exercises a great influence on the life and character of his pupils in many other ways. In order that this influence is good, he should have some qualities. A teacher who has these qualities may be called an ideal teacher. Let us see what those qualities are. It is the cheapest form of delight and entertainment for the millions. It is a blessing to everyone. Our country now is full of cinemas. Cities, towns and villages even are full of cinema houses.
