All these computers are called the first generation of computers.

Then, in the late 1950s, came the second generation of computers which used transistor. These computers could perform a million operations per second. They were replaced by the third generation of computers in the mid-1960s and 1970s. The computers of this generation used ICs (Integrated Circuits). The fourth genration of are computer, the microprocessor. The microprocessor is a chip of less than one square inch that contains millions of electronic circuits. This technique is in practice these days.

The fifth generation of the computing devices is still in the development stage. Their system is based on artificial intelligence. The goal of the fifth genration computing is to develop devices that respond to natural language input and are capable of learning and self-organization.
